The cheapest thing you could try is changing the bulbs. Sometimes they get corroded. If that doesn't work, you could have a problem with the switch, which is much more costly to repair.
If you don't drive the car everyday, you could try turning the blinkers on and off, to scrape the corrosion off the switch. Everything gets corroded if a car just sits.

You have a sticky or defective flasher relay, turn signal switch stalk. I don't think it could be a bad bulb because if one burned out, then when you activated the circuit it would flash twice as fast.

Seriously. VW's have some really screwy wiring. Unfortunately taking it to a dealer or VW licensed mechanic is going to be your best bet.

Flasher unit may be going out, fairly inexpensive to replace it, so start there. Make sure the bulbs (front and rear) and firmly seated in their sockets.

i own a repair shop,and it could be a flasher unit going out on it or a loose bulb in the socket,sometimes you can remove the bulb and clean the bulb contacts real good,and they will work just fine,it may just be a faulty bulb causing this to happen,good luck i hope this help,s.
