"more than half of all people in the united states oppose gay marriages, even though three forths are otherwise supportive of gay rights? that means than many of the same people who are even passionately in favor of gay rights oppose gay on this one issue." found this on a site... why do you think that is?

It's because marriage is a tradition to many. Whatever the matter, it is a State matter. Let the States do what they will, without the Federal Govt or the Courts making the laws.

It all has to do with getting the message out.

I firmly believe that atleast half of the voting age people in the US are generally rational beings. When the message is delivered to them explaining that gays could care less about marriage as it relates to religion and that gays are just trying to get equal access to rights. I think the majority will back same-sex marriage.

Btw, I have heard that Oprah has an episode today called Extraordinary Families and will be including a gay couple that is raising their 5 children, plus they will be discussing the obstacles that they face because they do not automatically get the rights afforded to a married couple.

Heck in this country look at marriage anyway. It is a shame the way people get married and divorced. Frankly I have been with my husband for 16 years and a piece of paper is never going to change that...I would feel disgraced to join the likes of Angelia Jolie, Liz Taylor, Britany Spears, Donald Trump and all the others who proove over and over again that marriage means nothing to more than half of the USA.

You want to save marriage - outlaw divorce! Make those people take their vows for life with no way out ever.

I would think that for some it is an acceptance that some people are gay and it is not a choice. They have a problem though when it comes to allowing gays to marry because they still want to see you as different and not the same as themselves.

I think gays should give their unions a different name: 'marriage' is, by definition, a tie between a woman and a man, so, allowing gays to 'get married' would always be a big big reason for objections by conservative people; I think gay people should fight to create a new 'union' with a different name, yet with the SAME rights, duties and legal effects 'marriage' has; just CHANGE the name of the union, yet let it have the very same juridical effects and features of marriage;) Conservatives would have to shut up and gay couples would be juridically valid and accepted by everyone;)

I think we have a major semantics crisis over the multiple definitions of marriage in this country. Some people see it as a religious word, which...is accurate, but not complete. It is also a LEGAL word, and that definition needs to be seperated from the religious definition.

I think it's the whole issue of 'civil unions' versus 'gay marriage'. People are supportive of the rights for gays to share their lives; they just want (for whatever reason) to not call it marriage.

That's the only way I can think to explain it.

I honestly have no idea. It all has to do with civil rights, and who honestly wants to come out and say that they can't have their civil rights. It all seems like the same issue.

Irrational thinking. Seriously, most people can't think rationally and many times irrational thinking explains their behavior.

(some will say religion, which is irrational since it purports to have comprehension of the supernatural)
