My doctor said that my baby is breech and i would have to have a c-section. My doctor appt. is tomorrow and im wondering if they will give me my date tomorrow. What week do people think they will do the surgry 38, 39, or 40? Mainly because i am very uncomfortable, i am having some contraction, not painful, i think braxtin hicks, but my baby is kicking me in the cervix and i am getting sharp pains down there when he kicks? Does anybody have an idea???

My doctor does not like doing those evc exams because of the risk. I am afraid of a c-section because of the stories i have heard though. I just want the baby to stay safe, and whatever i have to do i will. But i am scared!!!!

The external version is a great alternative to an automatic C-section - that's where they turn the baby from the outside. Sometimes they find they can't get it to turn, or they turn it but later it turns back around breech again. But it's worth a try.

Only thing is - although they give you something to relax your uterus before they attempt the turning, sometimes it starts labor, whether or not the baby turns. So they'll wait to do it until it's safe for the baby to be born (they have ways of testing the maturity of the baby's lungs to make sure the baby is ready to be born, breathing air and as healthy as possible) and they can be all set up for a delivery (if the baby turns successfully) or section (if it's not successful.) There are other risks to turning the baby from the outside - detaching the placenta - but that doesn't happen often, and at worst would also mean needing to deliver the baby right away.

So ask your doctor about all these things. (you can print this up and take it in to your next appointment to make sure you have something to refer to & don't forget something.)

In the meantime, there is an exercise - non-invasive, non-risky - that you can do at home which is often successful in getting a baby to turn around so it's head-down. It's called the "breech tilt" position and there's a description of it here:

It wouldn't hurt to try that position while you wait to talk to your doc, and while you wait for the external version/C-section date once you know the baby's lungs are ready. I know people it has worked for!

I went through that this past February with my son.

They did the 20 week ultrasound, and then never did another one. I kept asking my midwife 'are you sure?' when she would tell me he was in the right position. I just felt like he wasn't. I went a full week overdue before the sheduled an induction. When I arrived at the hospital, they wanted to do a last minute ultrasound to check everything otu before they administered the pitocin, and it's a good thing they did!

My son was in a face-up, frank breech position, which means that he was presenting butt first (instead of feet like many breech babies do), and he was facing my stomach instead of my back. Also, his arms and feet were up over his head and his knees were locked. And since I was at that point 10 days overdue and never very big to begin with, we were running low on fluid.

My dr. said it was one of the most ackward positions he'd ever seen.

He said there were two options, c-section or external version (where they push from the outside and try to get the baby to move). He said the EV had, in our case, less than 50-50 chance of working, so we did the section.

He was 10 days overdue when he was born.

Anyway, it really depends on what their exam will tell them tomorrow. If you are beginning to dialate and efface, it will probably be a little sooner than if you aren't, because they won't want you to go into labor if they already know you will have a section.

My guess would be 39 weeks if it is your first child, 38 is it isn't. They'll definately tell you more tomorrow, though! If you have a really special doctor, he may let you choose the date. A friend of ours knew all through her pregnancy that the baby would be born by cesarean, and her doctor gave her a certain week and told her she could pick any day that week for the birth.

Good luck, and congratulations!

My daughter was breech and I went 40 weeks. My OB would not allow me to go beyond the 40 weeks because my amnio result showed my daughter had down's syndrome. Babies with genetics disorders are at higher risk for being stillborn beyond 40 weeks.

Anyway, it may depend on your doctor's schedule when the c-section will be done. I scheduled mine when I was 37 weeks (for the delivery at 40 weeks). My OB said that when I get to the hospital they would do an ultrasound on me and if the baby turned he would induce labor rather than the c-section. After talking with several women who have had both vaginal and c-section births, I'm glad I had the c-section. Everyone of those women said they prefer the c-section because the recovery was easier. I thought my recovery was much easier than I expected.

Discuss your options with your OB. The lungs develop these last few weeks, so if you don't think you'll last much longer, your OB may give you a steroid to help the babies lungs so you can deliver earlier.

Best wishes for a healthy delivery and baby!

they'll probably schedule you for very soon. just remember the baby should be there for 40 weeks so any longer may be worse for you but luckily the baby is still developing fat and is growing. i wouldnt be surprised though if you get scheduled for next week. itd be worse for you to go into labor and then they have to do an emergency c section so im actually surprsied that ure not scheduled yet!? good luck though and cognrats!!

Usually 38.5 weeks. I don't know why that number but it seems to be the concensus online. Have they offered to do an external version? Or are you ok with having a C section?

My due date was september 13th and they induced me the 12th and I ended up having to have a c-section because my bones were too small for her to fit through.
