to want more for your family and allow your underachievement professionally to motivate you to do better. How do you strive for more while protecting the stability you have and great work life balance. I 'm not learning anything new at my job going on 4 years now and despite my efforts to do more I am rebuffed by the owner of the company who likes the status quo. I need to constantly improve myself yet feel hemmed in by this cozy envirnment.

any ideas on how to resolve this seemingly contradictory situation.

You could pursue an online degree in your spare time, then qualify for a higher paying or more responsible position.

You could make a lateral move (to the same job in a different company or under a different boss) and attempt to climb the ranks under a new manager. If you choose this, be sure to ask about advancement potential during the interview. Do NOT let word get to your current employer that you are interviewing elsewhere.

You could also apply for a position that has more responsibility at other companies.

Good luck with this!
