The north star I suppose. But since Magellan was not the first to cross the equator I don't know why it would have caused his crew to freak. I bet many of them had crossed the equator before.

Curious that you asked EXACTLY the same question as Veretta S did a few hours ago. The only difference is he used a capital C in celestial and you didn't.

Polaris, the North Star. Since mariners in the Northern Hemisphere relied on Polaris for navigation, not being able to see it scared his crew.

The North Star isn't visible south of the equator. And there really isn't a comparable star (bright and near the southern celestial pole) they could use, so navigation was more difficult.
