It's called "Joint Compound" you can get a small container or a big 40 lb bucket...depending on if you are just fixing a spot, or doing new construction. You'll also need drywall tape, (If you are joining pieces together) and several different width drywall knives, and sandpaper. You can have them show you everything you will need for your particular project at any home improvement store. You can also do a "Search" for "Hanging Sheetrock" or "Finishing Sheetrock" and there are several different sites that will walk you thru the entire process, start to finish:)

Sheetrock, mud, tape, trowels, screws, tape measure, level. You might want to get a demo from the friendly guys at Home Depot before you try it on your own. It can look really good or really bad!

One more tip from someone who did an entire basement.
Corner strips that have PAPER sides and a metal edge. You use a spray adhesive that BONDS FAST!
Much easier to mud over than the metal strips that you have to nail in.

when you say sheet rock, do you mean drywall or do you mean cement board for use in wet areas?
