As a form of therapy, dancing changes your focus. You set aside your other problems for 2 hours and all you do and think is dance. Dance involves both your mind and your body, unlike jogging where you can jog but still think about your problems. Dance is complicated enough that you have to turn off other thoughts and concentrate on dancing. At the same time, it is an aerobic activity that brings enough oxygen into your system and exersises all muscles. That in turn helps the brain chemistry to be on the right track.

In addition to the obvious benefits of exercise and social activity, dance is also a WONDERFUL form of therapy. There are actually dance therapists who special in using dance as a form of therapy. It can be used with any population - young, old, physically disabled, mentally disabled, non-disabled, abuse victims - the possibilities are endless! There has been a lot of work using dance therapy with autistic patients because it is a great way for them to express themselves non-verbally. It is also very good for abuse victims - especially children. Simply stated, the body can often express things that words can't.

Like any form of exercise, it burns calories and builds up endorphins. Partner dances are also good for social interactions, and then there's the artistic element.
