A lot of us are interested to know the economics behind these payments.Since the payments are substancial , are the prices of these tabliods/newspapers increased for these days.If not does the circulation go up ( 10 to 15 times ) to recover the payment made??Finally why do people buy these papers/magazines when they can as well as share it with neighbours/others.Why are people so interested in knowing the opinion/ seeing the photo of some one whom they have never met or will never meet again.

Name of the game is increasing CIRCULATION. These juicy items gets more copies sold. With higher circulation more advertisers pay huge sums to reach a larger readership. Also a large volume of subscribers pay to read the features. So scoops and celeberities increase circulation which brings in more advertisers and readers who pay for the whoole hoopla.

It would be a bad business model to vary prices for the same magazine, hence the price is an average and the scoops are dished out evenly over a time period. Also, people buy these magazines because they are not very cost prohibitive and provide entertainment value. The magazines are cheap enough so that sharing is a nuisance and inconvenience, while not so cheap such that the publisher makes no profit.Finding that sweet spot is the art of pricing and the job of MBA's.

The advertisement rates in popular papers are based on circulation n kind of readership the paper has and it is generally not objective and advertisers pay these huge inflated prices. Infact most of the papers are sold at a much reduced price than even the printing cost incurred! And when they hv celebrities it works in a mutual way! celebrities like to see themselves in the news and earn money and circulations go up - or the newspapers! they all make moneay and we, poor reders buy and read page 3!

ok....they pay some actress a million for pics of some new baby. due to those pics, they will sell more magazines. now figure they make a profit of say 50 cents per magazine printed...they only have to sell 2 million to break even. when you figure any 1 major town in the USA has at least 1 million...its not very hard to sell enough to at least break even. Then figure there are over 300 million in USA alone. So lets say they sell 4 million copies...2 million to break even and another 2 million for a 1 million profit. Seems like a lot but when you do the math...they only sold magazines to 1.3% of the population.

many buy these stupid magazines cause they live in a small, sheltered, matrix world.

..I guess somewhere a lot of people want to be famous, want to be respected..and thats why they want to know what the celebrities are doing..(so maybe they can also do it later on!!!)

Newspapers (and even lots of magazines) are primarily driven by revenues earned through advertising. Greater the number of people reading the newspapers, greater the amount of money advertisers are willing to pay for placing the ads. The sales amount (Rs. 2/3/4 per paper) can hardly cover the total cost of paying reporters & other staff, newsprint, operating expensive machines and paying distributors, newsboys, etc.

Also, rightly or wrongly, a lot of people now want to know about celebrities - what they are doing, what they are wearing, etc..Therefore, mass marketers selling soaps, detergents, colas, films, etc. are willing to pay a lot of money for placing their ads in the paper

Advertising is the reason why we get cheap newspapers (But eventually we pay extra when we buy the products that are advertised in the newspapers!!!!!!!)

Not sure what the reference to 'junket' means below. A junket has nothing to do with the money going to a newspaper. But it's 'Notting Hill' not 'Knotting Hill'.

However, basically advertising rates stay the same throughout the paper ieven if theres a big scoop - but advertising can beoffered within that scoop (on the page) for huge prices.

Also circulation figure rise significantly when there is a popular celeb or scoop on the cover. Princess Di used to raise ciruclation by 10's of thousands.

Advertising and sales. Big advertisers buy premium space in a magazine, especially when someone hugely famous will be involved in that issue.

I think that this will be compensated by some celebreties who pay the newpapers for publishing stories about them, good or bad, for just being in the limelight.
