A local expert on the job market told me that it is best for me to seek a job appropriate to my (male) gender. Is he on the money?

I think he's a dork. Most job "experts" can't get real jobs themselves. Do a job you love.

It depends on who you are and where you are. If you live in a small backwoods town, you might not be able to get a job as a secretary (because they want a girl to fool around with). Those same people will discriminate against married women.

And if you're uncomfortable with not seeing any other men all day, you'd pick barber above hairdresser. That's because of you though, not them.

But seriously, sexism exists both ways. Men are usually discriminated against by real pigs (who are often males themselves) who you wouldn't want to work for anyway.

OK, there are a few legit places to keep men out, like women's shelters, but even those usually have a male counterpart.

And some will discriminate because they think you'll want too much money! Seriously, they prefer women because they think they're cheaper.

In my business, Real Estate, many people are under the impression that a man will be a more agressive marketer and therefore get the home sold faster, for more etc. So they think a male realtor is a better list agent and the perception about selling agents is the opposite because the feeling is women know more about what byers are looking for (the nesting theory) and think a female agent will find thier perfect home faster and for a better price. As to weather these perceptions are true or not? Well I think it's more about the individual and thier work ethics and methods but we do have to be realistic and know what perceptions are in order to change them!

Men are mostly used for strong work loads, while women are used for a lot of buisness comprimises and things.
