I'm trying to find out how to become a self employed courier driver, but find that alot of books, websites or job offers in courier work are scams. Can anyone give me some good advice, contacts, websites in getting started?

First of all you must start you company first. Then why don't you send your company's calling card and advertistments and price rates to big companies. I'm sure big companys have a lot of items to be delivered.

i bought a 29 page pamphlet on the internet which gave me a lot of the info i needed. i decided against it but you will need a decent van , lots of contacts and a sat nav.the key to making money is once you have a job to take something to Leeds for instance , then ring around and try to find any work to take on the way or bring back. thats the only way to get the pay by the mile to amount to profit.
lots of big couriers such as DHL use self employed drivers on an ad hoc and regular basis.you could go through a big firm and get yourself a regular round locally or go same day and do the mileage. up to you.dont rush into it though.

self employed courier is not a good move because what tends to happen is you get left with all the rubbish or night jobs. the best way to do it is contact the local couriers and offer your services tell them what you want as ppm or hourly rate. sit and see what happens.
even try places like DHL they use them occasionally.
many times i had to drive from manchester to london for 3 am

Get a driving job w. a firm that needs deliveries and collections done daily first. You may find you get a Co. van/car, learn the ropes and make real contacts or even get head hunted if you're good at it. In London start w. Moves Co for self employed.

The ONLY way is to buy a van then ring around all your local couriers to get work

If you have the transport and are fully covered with Tax Insurance etc., ( I assume you are), then approach Mail order catalogues for a start (lots of them about). Mine delivers and is S/E and it works for him as he is a single father and he earns well. Its just a start, for you to get the jist of things then you could broaden your horizons - the world is your oyster, just remember me when you are as big as DHL (hope you make it).

My brother did this last November and wished he'd done it years ago. Sorry I can't be of more help. He has a friend who gave him all the info he needed.
