It's actually the "District of Columbia" not the " District of Columbus" although the linkage is there. Columbia simply means "Of Columbus" and refers to the explorer that is credited with finding America. So, the city of Washington, DC is named after both George Washington and Christopher Columbus.

Where to start. Christopher Columbus discovered the West Indies in 1492. That's why so many things have the name Columbus.
Unfortunately, Washington D.C. is not the District of Columbus, it is the District of Columbia. Try googling it for the reason.
