Yes. The tests require that you unplug it first. You need a meter or some kind of continuity checker. The thermostat should appear as a short circuit (always on). The element should be about the same since it has low resistance. If you don't have a meter there are cheap ones at Sears or a neighbor might have one.

The thermostat is the most likely. It just bolts on and the wires have terminals that slide on. If you have no meter you could remove it and bring it into an appliance repair place for them to check it and sell you a replacement if it has failed.

If you have no meter and the heating element is the usual open twisted wire kind you can look and see if it has a break in its twisted wire. If so that is the problem then you need to get a replacement.

The thermostat can be checked for continuity with an ohm meter, preferably the type with an audible function which makes a sound when there is continuity. just touch the meter leads to the terminals of the thermostat. no continuity, it is bad. if it is bad, the heat element may be also. it is checked the same way. I have replaced bad thermostats and had the dryer work only a short time before the heat element went bad as well, so now it is my policy to replace both every time. some units also have a cool down timer which can be checked the same way.....

A thermostat can show continuity if its good or bad. On this dryer there is a thermal fuse that will open if a thermostat sticks in the closed position. The fuse will be white in color and usually has two blue wires going to it.(could be red or one of each) If you can't test with a meter unplug and jump the two wires together. plug it back in. Start it and check for heat. If you get heat replace the thermostat next to the fuse as well as the fuse. Clean the vent and vent cap as these can also cause you much trouble if clogging
