most likely is your tcpip settings.

Right click your wireless icon choose properties to take you to network connections. right click the wireless connection from there and choose properties. in the "this connection uses the following items" box scroll down and double click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and choose obtain automatically for both options. then ok all the way out of there(it will take a minute to close the last window).
Then...
Right click your wireless icon choose properties to take you to network connections. right click the wireless connection from there and choose properties then choose the wireless networks tab at the top, and in the bottom box, highlight the school network and choose delete(or remove) then ok all the way out again.

now try to connect to the wireless network again in the normal manor.

Good luck !

For Wireless Connections, you need the Card or Built in Centrino capacity.
There is an option in Internet Connections, and it will show the Wireless Options, you need to search for Available networks, this will then display what you can connect to, and will also show if there is a lock or not

Check with the school's it department. They can give you all the info you need. If they are wide open they will talk you thru it quickly.
