ur problem is u need a converting app to do the work ... not a burning app ... that usually doesnt work out too well ... so u need an app like winavi or convertxtodvd ... or tmpgenc and an authoring application first ... then just use ur burning application to burn the files, not do the converting ...

Try different dvd discs such as imation. But if you really want to remove Nero from your system firstly reinstall it. Download something like Registry Mechanic to check your system for errors. Fix all errors, then try remove nero again.
Also try DVDfab platinum for copying discs or DivxtoDVD to convert a downloaded movie used with COPYTODVD which will burn the disc as soon as it's been converted.

I use DVD Shrink to convert the video to an iso file and DVD Decrpter to burn them to DVD both programs are free from various places on the web and DVD Shrink will auto start DVD Decrypter and burn your dvd. Just do a google or yahoo for the progs. I've never had any problems and all DVDs burnt this way have played with no trouble.

Roxio is easily the best, but some DVD burners are "married" to certain Burner Models.
The Key Part of Roxio's quality is the Drivers for the Hardware

The problem may be with your hardware or the blank media you use.
I've been using Nero 6 & now Nero 7 forever ... never had any problems with it.

You could try Pinnacle Studio which I use. It's very competent.
But let me make a suggestion. When you are rendering your avi file, make sure you turn off all virus checkers and any other applications. Some virus checkers can cause problems, causing dropped frames, etc. Also you can try doing it in 2 steps. Render first to DVD files, and then burning the DVD files to your DVD.

Roxio is dead easy to use. Nero 7 gave me a lot of hassle on my old PC.

Ive been through all of these in my time and i have had my fair share of grief with them all as you do, but IMHO Nero has always been the best of the bunch in the long run
