I have a contract with 02. It costs me £20 per month. I get 100 free text messages and 500 minutes free to landlines, plus 30 minutes to any mobile free. The free calls have to be made after 7pm until 8am, plus all weekend. The texts are for anytime. So normally i only call on my mobile after 7pm. That way it only costs me £20 per month total. I got my deal from the Sun newspaper about 4 years ago and am still with them now. Plus you get a free upgrade or £60 cash each year.

if you take out an o2 contract for £35 or more each month (including VAT) you can get 'long weekends' and that gives you up to 2000 anytime minutes to any uk landline or mobile free
vodafone do 'stop the clock' that gives you free evening mins but you would need to speak to them for details

Free simcards you can get off the net are usually loaded with a quid or twoto start you off. Try the rpoints.com freebie board for free simcards. I think orange give £1 and o2 give £2.50.
