My daughter is 2 1/2 and is sitting a car seat that converts from infant to todder. She has the harnets that strap across her chest but it's starting to get a bit too tight. She's a tall girl for her age. Wondering at what age is she able to have the regular seat belt go across her chest? Any help would be appreciated.

They do have boosters for children 30 to 100 pounds that the car seatbelt goes around to strap them in. I have one for my daughter. They are not expensive either. I think they have to be at least 34 or 35 inches tall and 30 to 100 pounds. I have included a link for it. It doesn't matter how old your child is as long as the requirements are met. My daughter is also 2, almost 3, and sits in one of these seats.

What bout getting a booster seat that can be used as a car seat or booster seat. I think they are called booster/toddler seats. The requirements of just a belt across the chest is 40 lbs and 36 inches (I think) but i would worry about developemently. she is only 2 1/2, most kids that use the seat belt are about 4. Even though she is big for her age, she isn't developmently on the same level as a 4 year old. Start shopping around for a toddler seat, one that can't be put refacing, it will be larger to accomadate for a bigger child.

Check the directions for your carseat, it will give you the maximum height and weight. Usually this is about 40 pounds for a convertible seat. If she has outgrown the one you have you will probably need to get a larger seat that she fits into, all states in the US require a carseat to used until atleast 4 years. Many states will require that a booster seat be used from 4-8 years. You can check the laws for your state on the Graco website.

The other poster has given you the legal requirements for the USA. You need to got to Target or a place like that and look at booster seats. Always have kids ride in the back seat, even when they get to be 10 or 12. Size of the kids is a factor because if an air bag goes off, it can really hurt a child.

The first answer is correct. The straps on her seat should be adjustable to accomodate this issue, but if you already have them as loose as they will go, she may be able to go to a booster carseat. The booster seats are made for children 40 to 80 lbs. If she does not weigh that much yet, you may just have to find another brand of carseat.

Remember, seat belts are made for adults. If the seat belt does not fit your child correctly, he should stay in a booster seat until the adult seat belts fit him correctly. This is usually when the child reaches about 4' 9" in height and is between 8 and 12 years of age.

If she's around the 40 pound mark, then she should be able to sit in a booster seat. I had the same problem with my son, he is tall for his age also. He is in a booster seat that holds the seat belt lower across his chest.

They are supposed to be in a booster seat until they are 48 inches tall. If shes not that tall yet you can always adjust the straps.

I went throught the same thing with both of my girls. I bought the booster seat that has a harness then when they outgrow that you can use the seatbelt with the seat. The seat belt clips to the side to ensure it is a proper fit for little ones. One like this:

If you live in America, it depends on the state you live in. In many states, it is a law now that you have to be either 8 years old, 4'9" or 80 lbs to go without a car seat or booster. I am including a link that breaks down the law by state.
