At some coastal lighthouses and on large ships, there is fog horns which are loud enough to reach out distances to warn of the presence of land or the ship. So even though the fog makes the light in the tower useless, the sound from the horn can still make it through and warn people. The water droplets in fog may block light when it is thick, but sound can vibrate the droplets so it still gets passed through the air but not as far.

Fog and smoke evidently attenuate (weaken the energy) of sound. However that might dampen distant sound making nearby sound stand out better.
