I'm fortunate enough to actually have a decent telescope.
Some of my favorite targets include Saturn and its rings, Jupiter with it's cloud bands and red spot, and the ring nebula. The most exciting thing I saw recently was one of Jupiters moons casting a shadow onto the planet. It was a great sight.
I have seen many things that the average human never gets a chance to see. I guess the cats eye nebula has evaded me. I would love to see that. I just can't ever find it.

Just a tip, binoculars make a great instrument for looking at the moon and seeing craters. Just don't observe on a full moon because it is simply too bright and will hurt your eyes. Binoculars will also help you see many more stars. Also, the Andomeda galaxy can be seen with the naked eye if you know where to look. It just looks like a fuzzy "star" but when you realize you are peering into the past about 3 million years it is something of awe and wonder. Nice question. Sorry for the ramble.
