They are monsters compared to the European Fridges

because we eat a lot, OKAY? we're fat and lazy, so the food is readily available and we don't have to go to the store.

in fact, many of us (who can afford it) have two fridges... one for the garage for less-used food.

truly, i think we're pack-rats, for food and other things... and like to have things "just in case".

America is a baby compared to the European nations. We have not burned through our resources and have not had to become conservative w/ our electricity consumption. We have big fridges because we shop once a week and shove everything in the fridge and use it all week. Europeans tend to shop more frequently.

You only mention fridges, but I think it runs true for all appliances. The washers and dryers (if you have one) seem to be much smaller, at least in Germany, and they take forever to run a cycle. We American's are much too busy for washers and dryers that take 6 hours to process one little load of laundry.

we entertain a lot. My fridge is a pro style, extra wide fridge that I fit huge platters and stuff in. I also have a second fridge ( my old one) in the basement, where I keep beer, soft drinks, and stuff like that. God, I don't know what I would do without my big fridge

Plus, here in Canada, our homes are much bigger than in the Uk, ( an average house in my town is 3500 square feet, so we do not have to economize on space by using smallr appliances, etc.

Because in North America, as opposed to Europe, the people don't enjoy shopping for food everyday because everyone is sooooooo damn busy all the time. So we buy huge fridges and stock up on everything (mostly things we dont need and wont eat).
Whereas in Europe, there are specialty stores for everything (fruit, bread, meat, etc..) at the corner of every street, so people buy what they need when they need it, abd thereby don't require large fridges.

Well, that's what I think anyway.

Why are American fridges so big? Why are Americans so big? 1 out of 3 American adults is overweight. I have this big fat teacher at my school who actually gets a lazyboy out when he has hall moniter duty and he only has to stand there for like twenty minutes. Americans are just fat people. And I am an American. Anyway to answer your orginal question we have big fridges because we're fat and we need a lot of room for all our food.

Americans (which I am) are mostly a bit conceited, arrogant and oblivious. And, also ignorant of other countries "haves and hav-nots". I didn't realize we had giant fridges. Thanks for the insight. I have 4 kids. My 18.2 cubic ft. fridge (including freezer), when fully stocked, has 4 gallons of milk, 4 gallons of juice, all sorts of condiments, ice, icecream, eggs, cheese, veggies, fruits, and meats. How big are euro fridges and what do you store?

Well. The shops are bigger and you have to drive to them. If you had a small fridge you would have to go to the shops everyday. Big fridges store more.

b/c Americans eat a lot more frozen/processed foods than Europeans. Europeans actually go to the market on a daily basis for fresh foods while Americans go grocery shopping monthly and get goods with preservatives we need more space than you all do.

LOL...it's cheaper to eat unhealthy here in America than it is to eat healthy wit fresh foods. I tried eating organic and my grocery bill was twice as much than when I ate frozen pizza's and TV dinner's every night.

I didn't know they are! My fridge is probably normal size for America, but it's still too small for us! I always say our fridge is too small! Things in America must be bigger than your country! I don't know I've never been there! I guess we're big eaters here!

Because Americans are big. They love food and need somewhere to store it. Blame Westinghouse for obesity in the States, they started it. Couple that with sports matches that go on for hours and are fuelled by gallons of beer, pounds of peanuts and fries and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on white bread. DISASTER. Get out of the house and DO SOMETHING!!

To fit in our enormous kitchens in our enormous houses.

The bigger and fancier, the better, and the more food it can hold, we LOVE stocking up like a nuclear war is eminent.

I have a big beautiful white one with all kinds of compartments and little nooks and crannies,
you can store gallons of milk on the doors
it's got a computerized temperature control and options whether I want crushed or cubed ice. We also get filtered water from the water dispenser on the front of my frig.

I LOVE MY FRIG.
