If we had no seperate states, the US would still be divided into sections. Either counties, villages, towns and or townships. Each part would still have a localized governmental control. There still would be a North and South and there still would have been the problems between them.

Look at California for instance. Its one of the biggest states and it features:
Beaches
Deserts
Rich Neighborhoods
Ghetto Neighborhoods
Cold North
Tropical South
It has problems between East and West.
There are gangs and gang wars.

Your question is almost like saying "What if the US was one big California"? With that said I would answer "Heck No".

Sometimes we all need to be part of something, but sometimes we'd like not to be part of something. Having seperate states give us options.

Also that question is still too broad. You need to narrow it down.
For instance Governmentally it would probably be easier to run (manage) you wouldnt have so many democrates and rebuplicans. There'd be less senators. The house of Represntatives would be smaller. I think Governmentally we'd have a better economy, better judicial system, better police policy. Hey I could be talking out my @$$. Maybe it would be worse. But its just my opinion

Good question. I think having states helps the government distribute resources better (each territory receiving personal attention), and allows each state to kind of be its own country, with its own government, which ensures that every little locational detail gets taken care of, and not forgotten in the grand scheme of things.

The only thing I dont like is how long it takes for some laws to get passed on to every state. One state might have one set of laws, whereas another might have something completely different.

Eventually though, by having this difference, you get to experiment with results on a per-state basis. This allows small regions to do their own "guinea pig" work, so that the laws that are proven to be GOOD can eventually pass on to the entire country.

I'm no expert, but I think if there were no states, all the above things would be much more difficult to do.

No I don't. Each state should look after the special needs of the public in that area. The Federal Government moves very slowly, if at all. Many times it is the states that get the ball rolling on essential legislation. Mass. in the area of health care and Cal. in the area of air pollution are two examples. It is one of the wisest things that our founding fathers established.

I do not think it would make the US a better place. The states are what makes the UNITED STATES. That means that our STATES are UNITED as one.

no, it'd be harder to govern and represent everyone as equally as they do now. I guess you're wondering why we're the only country with states, but technically its not true. The US uses the word states, but if you look at certain maps of other countries they're divided in some way or another, just dont use the term states.
Or you're talking about communism, which is too utopic to actually work.

In a lot of ways, states are an archaic way of arranging things. It might have made sense in the 18th and 19th centuries, but we are such a moble society now, it becomes a pain in the rear. Changing your driviers license, insurance, etc. It's a pain.

Having states makes some sense in terms of having more local control, but there should be more consistent laws between them.

I think it would help if there were no state governments. We desperately need to make our states much more equal than they are. Why should it matter what state someone is born in when all Americans are supposed to have the same rights?
