She went to the ER and she said that they catheterized her and took a pregnancy test and determined she had a miscarriage..but she doesn't know anything else other than she was like 3-4 weeks pregnant. My question is...how did the doctors tell that it was a miscarriage? Do they test tissue? Is the pregnancy hormone still in your body after you miscarry? And what happens with the embryo? Does your body break it down and expel it? Or do you have to have a D&C?

The hormone will still be in the woman's body after she miscarries, as it drops at the same rate it increases.

If the doctors look inside and see no embryo or a dead embryo, they can tell that a miscarriage has occurred.

The body can expel it on its own, or a d&c can be required. Everyone's different.

Wow! Lots of questions. Lots of answers

At three to four weeks the baby was tiny and was probably expelled in the clots. The doctors can see clots, and the cervix shows signs of dilation. Usually at 3-4 weeks the body will expel the baby....some women need D&Cs.

The hormone would still be in her body right after, but at low levels, the amount of time it remains depends on how far along she was.

At three to four weeks there is a good chance there was no baby, but a blighted ovum....a fertilized egg that never became a baby.

I'm sorry for her loss.
