It's my 40th in a few months, and I would like suggestions as to what activities me and my friends could do to celebrate this. something on the lines of go-karting or paint-balling!

There are tons of activity centers out there (normally they include paintball, go-karts, batting cages, arcades, mini-golf, things like that.) Go make a day of one.
Not sure what area you're in, but look up Craig's Cruisers for an idea.

Have a Happy Party with clowns and ballons and cake and all the other things children have at their birthday parties.
Dude, you're 40, get a bottle, get your friends together, have a shot and move on, it's just a day.

Go fishing. Go camping. Go sky-diving. Hire a yought and have a piss-up on the boat. Go to the Horse racing track for the day. There are so many things you can do. It all depends on your budget as well. I am almost there. Just 3 years to go!

have a jelly and ice cream party! have a birthday party like you did when you were little, jelly and ice cream, fairy cakes, pas the parcel, musical chairs etc. dont forget the party bags and birthday cake with your favourite character on! you'll have a blast!
