or in the progress to cremate.

That is the purpose of a wake. That used to actually happen to people. They would be misdiagnosed as dead. So they decided that they would keep the body around for a couple of days to see if it would wake up, hence the name. I have also heard that some old graveyards would have a bell on the top of the soil with a string going down to the coffin, so that is the person woke up, they could pull the string to ring the bell. Then, a person whose job it was to sit in the graveyard and listen for bells would respond and help the poor guy out.

However, with current medical science the likelyhood of someone being misdiagnosed as dead is extremely unlikely. And the process of embalming would kill a person anyway.

I have not heard anything about being cremated. It would be terrrible if they made a mistake though. Being burned alive is incredibly painful.

They used to find coffins with scratch marks on the inside, some poor soul had been buried alive in there, what an awful death. There is a sleeping illness that makes some people appear dead, when in fact they are not, I have read several stories about people waking up on the mortuary slab. As already mentioned though, the process of embalming would finish anyone off if they were still alive.

Yes it is possible. There is a poisonous fish that is eaten as a delicacy, but if the wrong part is eaten it could put you into an induced coma that imitates death. A medical examiner who is not paying attention may miss this all together, so it is possible that they could wake up while in the morgue. Now the only way to wake up in the grave would be in those countries that do not have medical examiners and those who do not drain the blood from the body first before burial. I think all are embalmed in the U.S., so I doubt it would happen here. The same with cremation.

Yes, it is possible, and it has happened before.

In New Orleans (and other places) there is a cemetery where the dead are above ground in crypts, rather than buried under the soil. Attached to these crypts, are little bells with strings connecting to the inside of the coffin. If the dead decided that they aren't...they just rung the bell, and (hopefully) the groundskeeper would realize they needed to be let out.

There have also been numerous cases of coffins being found with clawmarks on the inside...what a terrible way to go.

In the past probably occurred much more frequently, but these days not so likely. I remember hearing a story a while ago that in some way relates this to zombies, voodoo and that sort of thing. But typically before one is buried, they are embalmed...so I'm sure it'd be figured out rather quickly if one is dead or not.

Not in today's time.

They mortuary removes all the blood and files the body with a formaldehyde solution. If you weren't dead before this, I guarantee you are by the time they finish preparing the body for cremation or burial..

Years a go.. They did!!!!! And, some people put a bell on the out side of the ground. And a string on the hand of Loved ones. So if they wake up. They could ring the bell. And , Dig them up.. But, now. With embalming. they are gone.

my father was in the vietnam war, got shot up in the field helping a fellow soldier and was pronounced dead and taken to the morge in one of those black plastic bags. when the nurse unzipped the bag, he sat up and took a long deep breath. somehow he survived, he has a scar from the center of his chest to just above his belly button. so i guess it would be possible to be assumed dead and wake up after being buried.

Kind of impossible I think. They replace your blood with embalming fluid. You need blood for your organs to function, especially your brain.
