I have cable hook up for my internet in one room. To get it hooked up to another computer in my son's room

Question

do I have to call the cable people for another box? Can my son and I be on the computers at the same time without one of us interfering with the other? If I don't need another box, how do I hook him up? Thanks.

Corona, you will need to purchase what is called a ROUTER...

Generally the costs about 30-50 bucks. Usually you can get a good one for 30 or 40 bucks...

It works like this...

Internet Box has 1 connection, it plugs into your pc....
You plug internet cable box, into router...
Router then has 4 ports to allow 4 other computers to connect...

If you dont want wires running from a router to your sons room.

I recommend getting a WIRELESS ROUTER< and a WIRELESS PCI CARD for his pc...

All you need to do is ask for those 2 items at your local store, best buy etc...

What we do, is we buy a firewall/router as sold at Walmart, Circuit City, Office stores, or at http://newegg.com or, http://pricewatch.com or, http://computergate.com or http://tigerdirect.com

I prefer Linksys. The wireless router/firewall (typically about $80) could let us use wifi to connect distant computers to the internet. The other distant computers would need to have a wifi card in them. Typically cost aobut $30.

Must set it up, and change the factory user and passwords to keep evil people out, plus, make it a closed network, start the firewall, and use the included encryption protection, or else all the pedophiles can put kiddie porn on your computers, and you could go to jail, like the young boy on the 20/20 TV news show.

Very simple;buy a wireless router to connect to cable modem and follow the instruction to hookup. the computer in your son's room must have device to receive wireless data.Other wise need buy a"card" to connect to your son's room computer.you can go to compusa those people will help you how to pick the products.You do not need anther box because you are not use for tv in your son's room.You both use the internet at same time and will not interfering each other.
