I have been approved for social security disability so I am wondering If short-term disability from my job will effect my social security disability?

You will not need to pay this back as this is part of a premium you and/or your employer had paid. As far as SS benefits your short term disability (STD) will be affected. Primarily because to recieve SS benefits you have proved this is more than 'short term'. Further, you only get one set of benefits. If you recieve the SS check and then your STD check you will then pay back the STD check. So be careful. However, if the STD insurance carrier is slow in paying you, you just pay attention to the date on the STD check if it falls before your SS check is recieved (not when approved), you can keep that. For example; you recieved SS benefit approval on 1/1/07, to be effective on 2/1/07, you should get your SS check within 5 days. Let's say you have a STD check coming in, and it's dated 1/27/07, you can keep that, but if you recieve a STD check dated 2/2/07, sorry as painful as it is, it has to be returned. Now, there are exceptions to the rule in all cases. So please talk with your HR representative about the benefits you have. This is the time when you should keep a notebook of all correspondence, phone calls with who, when and the subject. To keep it straight for yourself and also for future reference if things get muddled.

I'm sorry that you are in disability mode right now in your life. It is very frustrating, scary and you are in vulnerable position in ways you may have never anticipated. But you are fortunate that you have this at least to fall back on. My prayers to you and your family while you recover.

if will dependent on the policy, but generally no, you will not have to pay it back. however, when your SSDI kicks in, your short term disability will stop paying out. if you have a long term disability policy from your employer, it would be a good idea to file a claim, as ssdi does not count unearned income (however ssi does, so if you receive that instead of ssdi, (which you may if you did not work enough to get as much or more from ssdi as you would from ssi), you do not want any outside income , unless it is more then what ssi would give you
