I have been playing basketball for about five years (on a team) and the positions that I have been playing where: Defence: I know that this is weird but I was the point gaurd for defence only. and on Offence: I played under the basket. Well I played those positions for four years, now I have to play point gaurd, but I don't really know how to. Dose this make sence? one of the other coaches tells me that I drop my head when I dribble the ball. how do I stop that. and my worst habbit is that I am used to reacting (reacting on defence is good but not so good on offence) and my mind gets confused for offence, because on offence you have to think.
cons:
not thinking on offence,
I am almost the shortest person in the whole league,
dropping my head on offence,
and having a team with only three other players that are OK,

pros:
I am the best dribbler on the team,
I am quick,
am the star defence player (not that I have anyother choice),
can set really good picks,
etc.
help!

I know that the world will not end tonight if we lose we have lost the other two games, so one more lost won't make a difference. I just want to make myself better so I won't let my team down so much. I play on a city league, and my dad is the coach and I am the oldest (it is co-ed) and so most of the pressure is on me and the center. mostly me though....

also I play most of the positions and am not a ball-hog, I like passing the ball because if they have the ball then I do not have to think about the taller people in my face trying to take the ball away from me!
:-D

Coming from a coach's point of view, I think it makes sense. Coaches will often put in players for specific reasons and usually this is done because the coach think that is what will take to win games. You are probably the best in your team in defending against PG based on your skill level. But you might not be the best handler on offense so you are designated for something else, in this case, playing under the basket. I still remember when Rodman guarded Magic Johnson in the 89' playoffs between the Pistons and the Lakers. Rodman was not a PG in any regards, but Coach Daly thought that it was the right move at the time b/c Rodman had the best ability to defend Magic at the time. Coaches will often do that to win games. And players should learn to accept it to win games.

My suggestion is to work on your dribbling skills, there are a few great drills you can do to help you out for the future. Start by dribbling in one position or up and down the court using your OFF HAND (weaker hand, so if you are right handed, this would be your left) and keeping your head up all the time. Don't worry about losing the ball or going full speed, just focus into making it through the drill (even if it means going slow) correctly. As you show improvement, I'm sure the coaches will notice and you will be fine.

the best way and simple way to answer this is....when your playing point gaurd, your job is to make all the other people on your team better! Dont worry about anything but just passing the ball to the open person. You can just all the sudden stop putting your head down when you dribble either. That is going ot take alot of practice. I played basketball for 20 years and the last 10 of them i played 5 hours a day then i got injured and cant play anymore. Its easier said then done, but the thing you have to remember is, just relax and tell yourself, its just a game. The world will not come to an end tonite. Just concentrate on making your teamates do the scoring and all the work if your playing pointgaurd

I can see why you are frustrated. As a coach, however, I have a hard time agreeing with your assertion that you are the best dribbler on the team. You may be the fastest dribbler, but if you are not seeing the floor and your teammates and are not making the coach's offense unfold on the court, then you are less suited to that position, or at least, you need more work in these areas.
If your mind gets confused on offense and you prefer to react, you need to train yourself to anticipate what will happen, so you know what to expect. Take extra time to study your team's plays and try to know everyone's jobs.
There is a training aid that looks like goggles that prevents you from looking down at your dribble. That could be a good investment for you.
Are you working on your shot? Could you shoot well enough to be moved to shooting guard instead of point guard?
