I bought a Kenmor at Sears 15 yrs ago. It was a canister also. I paid 249.99 on sale, the rep said it was the"top of the line" model. WRONG!!!!!!!! I purchased the maitance warrenty on it for another 60.00 and it stopped working 4 months after I got it. They said the motor blew. I sent it to get repaired, came back did the same thing, they put a used motor in it.!!!!!!! I sent it back again demanded a new motor, I get it back and 2 days later the belts went on it and the motor siezed again. They didn't honor my agreement and I was out of lil over 300.00 I now own an electolux canister. I love it. I have had it now for 14 yrs and it was the best investment that I made. 425.00 for the canister and all attatchment including the powe vac. Not One Stitch of problem with it.You spend a little more but you get a good machine.

Not sure the model number of the Kenmore, but is it that white one, about $300? Just got one too, seems okay but not sure it's everything the sales rep made it out to be. There aren't a lot choices for smallish canisters it seems. We have hardwood and only the family room has carpet. Don't really need an upright.

We have a golden retriever whos a big shedder too. The jury is still out with regard to this vacuum with us.

I think that's a too broad question, since it depends what you want to use the vacuum for.

Here are some tips, I found them on the below mentioned source:

1. Uprights - good for carpet cleaning

2. Canister (cylinder) - very good suction, are easily manuevered

3. Central Vacuums - best suction, no noise, huge bag, outlets around the house, ...

4. Robotic - Roomba is one of the best, but their suction is not good, so they can be used for small dirt stuff

And about the brands?

Dyson, Hoover, Eureka, Miele all have huge number of models for almost every need. Dyson is quite expensive and Hoover might be the next best thing.

Dirt Devil, Electrolux and Shop Vac are also honorable mentions.

In the end - it depends on you: what you need and what is your budget.

Definitely Kirby. They are pricey but they are worth it and you have a lifetime guarantee. They come with many attachments to include a shampooer. I'm telling you that it is the best and I have tried them all.
