I definately miss the old fashioned stuff. I think the older toys made the children use their imagination more. There was more interaction and hands on. Most of the stuff now does things on its own and the children just end up watching it. I think most children were more contend years ago then they are now. They have to learn to amuse themselves more.

Last I checked, merry go rounds are still on playgrounds everywhere.

The most dangerous structures are always the most fun, e.g. the merry-go-round (I was the runt of the group, it was dangerous for me,) the metal spiral slide that ripped skin off (and burned you if it was a hot day) and sent you out at over 20 mph, swings over concrete, monkey bars over concrete, etc...

Yeah, I think the addition of pea gravel pits under most of this stuff was a good idea, and the replacing of metal with plastic as well.
