Ive picked up this hitchhiking couple in New York and they said they were from Arizona, going all the way to Maine. I brought them to my house and let them eat some food and said they could clean up but they declined. Then I gave them a ride into town where they continued on their journey. I wasnt too concerned about them causing any harm seeing as how they were old.

Never a hitchhiker, but I have picked up people stranded from a vehicle. I don't know if I would ever pick up a hitchhiker, not sure.

I've picked them up many times, especially if they're in a group. One time I picked up these kids from Vermont on Rt 2 and they ended up knowing someone I knew.
You can meet some really cool people hitching, although not many people still do it or will pick you up anymore cause TV and other media has made everyone paronoid.

I picked up one once. She was female and much smaller than me, around middle age, looked kind of sad. She didn't look like she could pose any threat and just wanted a ride to a different neighborhood there in town ... not like we were out on the highway or anything.

Even that probably isn't very smart, but I was just trying to be nice.

I saw this woman with 4 kids in the car have a blow out . . after I drove past her and saw the look on her face I found the next turn around and went back and took her and the kids to the next gas station so she could call someone to help her. This was before cell phones existed.

Picture this-- Driving cross country from Illinois to California in a station wagon, 2 parents, 5 kids, back full of luggage and my dad decides to pick up a guy. He was nice and all but when I think back on it, we were very lucky.

I did once, and I nagged him so bad about why he didn't just get a job that he begged to be let out after about 30 minutes.
