Most of the time these reactions are to release stress. People who laugh a lot are usually less stressed than those who don't.

It's simply to show our body language. It's to show our fellow humans how we are feeling.
BTW, we are NOT the only creatures to show emotions! Dogs wag their tails, cats purr, and chimps have many facial expressions!
Chimps and apes also laugh (and I think cry).

Its caused and triggered by the part of our brain that controls emotions and drives. The part is called the hypothalamus which is situated in our forebrain.
