You might have something already on it, even though it could be something miniscule, you won't be able to put any more on it.

your problem is not a big deal and you have already got the answres mostly they are correct.but here i'd like to add something else.1st which file type the movie is ? THE most possible types are, as i guessed, are either AVI(DIVX) or MPEG .
2ND which programme you re using to burn the movie ?
I GUESS you are using window's cd writing wizard ,which support only deta cd not dvd.if your file is AVI then its really easy to burn into any type of disc (cd or dvd) just get the divx player 6.2 or above,it will allow you to burn the movie file into the cd and dvd as well. and if its MPEG then its a bit horrible job to get it into the disc.but if it file type dosent matter to you just convert it into the Avi using the divx converter which comes in a bundle when you download the Divx player and burn it using divx player .now you can watch it on any dvd player which must be Divx certified.now i will come to the real matter, if you are sure that your disc is blank or rewritable then its damaged or currupted try another disc .

It could be a 2+ hour movie that you are up-converting too high. I think the 7 gb dvd's are good for 2 hours of movie in the highest DVD quality.

1 you haven't erased the content on the disc
2 the disc needs to be formatted
3 the disc is not compatible ( + or - ? )

most likely 1 ( unlike some formats like tape most DVD recorders will not write over existing data )

Your DVD burning software is probably converting your movie file from one format (avi maybe) to the DVD format (which is mpeg4 I think). The original format is compressed to a higher degree than the DVD format, so when your program does the convert it can exceed the DVD's capacity.

Is the disc formatted correctly? Reformat the disc and try again.
