You make the cross stitch piece and insert it in a plastic case made for just such a purpose. I have seen them already made, but am looking for the kit.

Also, you might try some of the mousepads that you can insert your own photo, just do a cross stich pattern that happens to be that size and then insert it in the mouse pad. Im not sure that would work very well, a mouse pad needs to be very smooth and flat, and a cross stitch would be bumpy.
