in return of the jedi luke asks leia her memories about her mother which she seems to remember some minor details i:e "beautiful but sad",yet luke can remember nothing,how can this be likely when padme died only a few minutes after their birth and luke was born first or is she referring to her adoptive mother?

Well, this is probably just a continuity error, but if you wanted to make it fit you could say that because Luke and Leia both had Jedi powers from their father, Leia was more in tune with her mothers feelings while still in the womb.

When he asked her that question she was referring to the mother she knew, her adoptive mother, neither of them knew their birth mother.

She was more likely speaking of her adoptive mother
