how does traction ccontrol work on a car can u turn it on or does it activate itself?

It works by itself, via the cars computer. When one front wheel slips the brake is applied to that wheel to stop the spinning. (front wheel drive) On rear wheel drive vehicles G.M. for example its called posi-trac, below 30 MPH if one rear wheel slips, power is transfered to the other wheel with traction. Hope this helps!

There are many different systems used for Traction Control, but the common ones are the Slip Limited Differential and the Brakes.
The Slip Limited Differential is a system that detects the “slip” of the tires over the pavement and reduces the torque (power). It is a mechanical process and usually cannot be “turned on or off”.
The Brakes are also used on most newer cars as technology allows now to monitor wheels undependably using a computer, and will apply some braking (just a little) to any wheel(s) that are detected to be slipping. This system usually works together with the ABS system as they both use the same concept to work.
Now, to be able to answer correctly your second question “can I turn it on or off” I would need to know what vehicle you are talking about. Each manufacturer uses different systems and sometimes they allow the driver to control the system, but most of the time, they don’t.

Some vehicles have a switch that you can disable the function with and some are full time traction control. The traction control works much like the a.b.s. brakes work - only in the reverse order. When the wheel speed sensor senses a wheel or wheels spinning, it applies a slight braking pressure to that wheel until it receives traction. It happens so quickly that you don't notice anything except for the better traction.
If you have traction control activated it will activate only when you start to lose traction.
