You don't have to download google earth. I suggest you try the following site (this one also belongs to google) :

There is a provision to type a name and search. You can hit not only a city but a specific location in a city. You can also mark your own house or any other feature for everyone to see.

Just download the programm and install it. Then you can zoom in to any place on this blue planet. But beware, some areas have a very poor resolution whereas on some areas you can see actual people. Also some views are very out of date. So the area around the new Dubai palm projects did not show any of those up until some months ago.
But get the thing, it is great!!!

Automatically you will find what you want.
