Do a science subject e.g. Biology, English and one other A level (e.g. History, Law, Chemistry, Geography, Maths...). You do not need to have A level Psychology in order to do a degree in Psychology. Then go to a reputable university and do an honours degree in Psychology. You will need to get either a first class degree or an upper second or you will not stand a chance of getting into clinical training.

Ensure that the university of your choice gives you the modules required for graduate registration with BPS. (Some courses are not scientific enough!)
You will then need to train for clinical psych by doing a Master's degree; you can do this while training.

Gap years between A levels and university or between university and higher degree are always helpful - being a little older and more experienced just dealing with people in everyday life can be good when you start. Even doing another job for a few years can be useful particularly if you are dealing with people.

For further information the British Psychological Society in Leicester will be able to help you. Their website is useful .

its a good idea to start by choosing to do an AS/A2 in psych then choose a uni that offers a BSc.Hon in psych and make sure the degree course tou choose gives you basis for registration with the BPS (British Psychological Society) after that the choice gets more difficult as fewer universities offer post grad courses in clin psych and the competition is fierce. There is- like it or not- some sex discrimination at this point and later. Basically, the system seems to favour men in clinical psych, but stick to your guns. And good luck to you.
