its a code set by the county that they have stuck with for years, some times if a husband dies, they will bury him first, then when the wife dies they will open the grave and lower her casket on top of his, so they have to allow for enough room, now days most people pay alot of money to be buryed to much if you ask me. it has very little to do with decomposing, because after the body is filled with fermaldahide it tends to slow down the decomposing, then the bodies are placed in the casket .which is sealed and rott resestant, depending on quility, then they either place the casket in a big concrete box. or a plastic shell. the plastic shell will float and both are water tight. then after its sealed up. they lower the surcofagus in to the grave. now you can see some of that room will be taken up. after a body is sealed up in this way it will take a very long time to decompose. some times they bury people only 3 feet under because in the case of the husband and wife. who ever ends up on top is only about 3 feet from the ground. are if some poor homeless dude over doses on meth. i seen ware they only dug a 3 foot hole and put him in a pine box and put him in the ground, but they tell the general public you cant do that, you have to buy this are that. which i have to agree with because when you are digging in the old part of a grave yard to move a corps to a new location if it is raining alot the water table starts to come up and this red foam forms in the water in the open grave and it smells to and you can just amagine what it is, thats why they seal the things up so well. the smell of death permenates.

Several reasons.....1st.....vandals and thieves can not get to them easily (most people ae buried with some belongings of value..
2nd- When the body rots it can be quite Toxic and very stinky, so 6ft has been determined deep enough for the smell and disease to stay away. Aslo people are very emotional and just won't let go and will dig up there loved ones and that is not healthy.

I think if a body is buried in a grave more shallow than that of 6 feet, the decomposition will attract animals. And who wants to see a pack of wild dogs gnawing on Uncle Bob's torso?
They also pose certain, though minimal, health risks to living humans. The deeper-the safer.

Plus, six feet under makes a great name for a TV show.

To make sure that the body smell does not come out, annoying the people. Also, may be to avoid easy picking of the body outside for black act etc.

it's below the frost line so that the body can decompose as intended instead of going through the freeze-thaw cycle

Perhaps it is to make sure that the grave is not easily tampered with.
