On some surfaces, you can write over the permanent marker with a dry-erase marker, and then when you wipe it off, both will be removed. Haven't tried it on metal though.

Use an expo marker and go over the permanent marker and then let it set for a few minutes and then wipe it off with rubbing alcohol

Try that greasy hand cleaner.....intended to clean paint off your hands. It works on ball point pen on white leather....may remove the marks.
OR
Try Grease Lighting. I used it on my kitchen cabinets and it took the paint off it was so strong. I used it full strength from a spray bottle.

Nail polish remover takes it off easily. I was expecting grief but that was very simple and effective when I had this problem.

You can try a solvent of some kind, acetone maybe one to try. or one of the liquid sanding solvents.
depends on your surface if you don't want to mar it.
the good ol ---sand it off would work.

Goof off, usually hair spray too. But I would try the goof off first.

acetone works well on bare metal. just make sure the room is well ventilated.
