Well this is a tough one, but I have to go with The Rolling Stones. They have been around forever, they are still valid, and selling Lps, and their music is good . Their back catalog is the sound of generations, and they look like they'll go on forever. The Beatles come in a close 2nd as they are more widespread and universal.

The Beatles. There are so many things they are responsible for or were the first to do. Not based around any one guy, like an Elvis, so that brought a lot of contributions. Used backing vocals and focused on music melodies to craft songs which are timeless. The first big touring band. The first big studio band. They promoted technology in both areas. The turned Rock into an art form with "Sgt. Pepper", which launced rock's greatest and most creative era. The did the first charity concerts. They had top guest musicans on their later releases. They contributed to other art forms and performers like Monty Python. They made movies, the first music clips. They formed their own production company. Each Beatle then had a notable solo career which also influenced many. They will never be topped.

Well, I would have to go with the relatively obvious choice: The Beatles
Before them, no Rock and Roll group influenced as many people or the society and music like they did. They also were around for a good amount of time (about 10 years) and the way they used their talents and music was the beginning of the whole Rock and Roll revolution of the 60's and 70's.

Beatles and the Stones.
Two different bands, two huge influences.
Both equal in terms of the greatest.
Abbey Road and Beggars Banquet are masterpieces.
