Both.
There are things you can do in the Movies that you can't do in a play in terms of perspective, visual effects, change of scene, etc. "Jurassic Park" on the big screen was impressive (especially in the early days of CGI).
However, I echo the sentiments of commentors here who point out that live theatre offers something movies never can. Theatre is immediate and personal. With theatre you are "right there" and there is more a sense of involvement in what is going on. A good show or musical can be amazing in a way that a movie never can.
It's the difference, I suppose, between seeing something on the news and witnessing it in person. On the news you observe what happened, but if you're there you experience it and take in a level of detail and nuance videotape can never show.

I greatly prefer theatre. There is something about watching the performers live that gives an energy to a performance that films often lack. The performers are taking constant risks in performing live - the audience shares that experience with them.
The audience also become more a part of the show in theatre. Their enthusiasm (or lack thereof) affects the actors and inspires subtle changes to the performance.

It only dawned on me recently how important the feedback from the audience is to the actors, or musicians (same with a concert). Can you imagine a film of a panto being like the live version?
Some plays, like some films, can be sooooo dull.
On the other hand, you can obviously show more in a film - can't imagine a stage play of Casino Royale would be quite as thrilling as the film. So, it's horses for courses. The theatre is more of an occasion, so I prefer the stage: a play, concert, opera, or ballet.

I prefer good theatre to a movie anyday. There is an immediacy you get in live theatre that you simply can't get from a movie.

As a performer I much prefer the theater. There is interaction with the audience and you can adjust your performance to maximize the impact of your performance.
With film you do a lot of sitting around for just that brief few minutes on film. You don't have any control over the end product as the director uses the "take" they like best and they may edit out parts of your performance. And then there is the whole perform and then wait 6 months to a year to see how it came out.

Theatre, because after a good production you can clap and get an encore, but who claps after a good movie? Plus plays somtimes contain obvious mistakes but these are edited out of movies.

really depends on what you are seeing ...and what seat you have
I go to the theatre a lot as I work in the industry, but sometimes the special effects and scenery in a movie are wonderful
