i only have this problem when its cold out or raining. i have a remote start so i try that first but the car does nothing. it acts like its going to start but it doesnt. i try it with the key and it does the same thing. it turns over just never gets close enough i guess. we just put a new battery in it two weeks ago so that cant be it. my boyfriend and i can't figure out whats wrong with it...
its a 96 so maybe cause its a lil older but still, ive been having this problem ever since i got it basically.
another question, whenever its raining out, when i try to turn my steering wheel locks up and i have to pull hard or yank on it to get it to turn. why is it doing this? do i just need power steering or what?
please help me out here...

I would agree with sowhats answer... the only other thing I could think of is maybe failure somewhere in the coldstart system, like it not getting enough gas when it is cold. You can try pumping the gas when its cold or raining to see if this is the case. If it still struggles, I would go with the coil. An old ignition system can cause alot of problems when running cold.

your problem is either in the fuel system or in the ignition system. try looking under the hood at night while someone else tries to crank the car. If you see sparks then you have found the problem. when an ignition component like spark plug wires or distributor caps go bad they can allow the high voltage from the ignition coil or coil packs depending on what you have, to "leak." If you can't find anything wrong with that you should check the fuel filter to see if it is clogged. some are mounted behind the engine on the fire wall, others are underneath the car. After that check the fuel pressure there is a fitting for this purpose,On the fuel rail which is what the fuel injectors are connected to. You can borrow a fuel pressure tester at almost any auto parts store. also check the cylinder compression. I would also suggest if you are the do-it-yourself type that you buy a Haynes repair manual available at almost any auto parts store.

Battery is fine if a car turns over. So you didnt need to even go there.

Usually VWs who run like crap in damp weather have a cracked coil pack. They are known for this. Especially the VR6.

As far as the steering? No idea but I would get to a shop before something bad happens.
