Has any player ever had their jersey retired by more than one team, or is that even possible?

it's happened several times. Other then Gretzky (99) both teams who raise it have to decide to do it on their own though. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen on occasion.
BTW, the Canes don't honor the Whalers retired numbers. We only have one formally retired number- 10, Ron Francis. I don't like that either.
Gretzky was different though- he had his jersey retired league wide by the NHL. most teams don't' have a banner though, as he never played with most teams.

Edmonton will retire Mark Messier's jersey in February. He already had it retired by the Rangers. It is possible but only for marquis players that had a huge impact on more than 1 team.

Bobby Hull had his number 9 retired by both the Chicago Blackhawks and the Winnipeg Jets/Phoenix Coyotes, and Gordie Howe's number 9 was retired by both the Detroit Red Wings and the Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes.

Wayne Gretzky had his retired By the Edmonton oilers and New York Rangers then the NHL retired his Number.

Other than that I am not sure. Patrick Roy might be for the Habs and Colorado...
