I imagine it has a lot to do with mental illness. When Margaret Thatcher closed mental hospitals lots of former patients were made homeless. Some runaways become trapped in a begging and drugging cycle. Taking alcohol/drugs to cope with the boredom and self degradation of begging. There is an absence of authority in homelessness which is slightly attractive in that they can roam freely without being tied down-knowing that they will probably make enough money for a drink and sandwich at least. No employer telling you what to do. No bills arriving,no responsibilities. Perhaps a marriage breaks down because of the husbands alcoholism and he is kicked out. Or a son in his 20's is stealing household items to pay for drugs so is thrown out. There are many different scenarios.

Lack of education, addictions, mental illness, dire circumstances. I can empathize for anyone in a seemingly hopeless situation. You cannot judge a person by how they look. Just because they have hands, as you said, doesn't mean they have the mental capability to hold a job. A homeless man was standing on the corner of 1-95. He had his pant leg rolled up, obviously to show why he was begging for money. His leg was contorted horribly and had oozing sores and bandages. How can you not feel empathy for someone like that? And yes, I gave him money.

It could be a variety of things that could cause a person to go homeless but i think in most cases its caused by the abuse of alcohol and drugs. For those I do not feel any sympathy, for women with children that were forced out there I do.

Lets say your wonderful family life somehow got flipped upside down one day.
Your last parent living , your taking care of them dies. Leaves you alone in this house. You are older, no job, no family, you can't pay rent alone.
So you have to leave that rented house. You live in your car, you have no job, no $, no place to take a shower to get a job.
You leave your car.
And live on the streets.
Sorry every one was not born with a silver spoon in there mouth like others.
Yes some people could help themselves. But our society consits of different people, educated and not, and how they were raised.
Some are addicted to drugs, some are mental.
I had a n uncle who had no where to go and no one in our family would take him in.
He ended up in a homeless shelter. He did not work and he could have, but by then he was 70 years old.
I was too young to remember everything, but you dont know what its like in someone elses shoes. They may not want to be a burden to someone else or depend on anyone.

In my opinion I don't say I pity homeless people like the ones you mentioned. But I do know people who were homeless because
1) They're outcasted by their own family members and they are not fit to do any kinds of job.
2) Their own parents or spouses borrowed someone a lot of money and when their parents or spouses can't pay it up in time, they suffered along.
3) Have you ever considered orphans?

you cant lump them all together. Do you really think anyone with free choice would choose to live in a sleeping bag on the streets often in the freezing cold with people shouting abuse at them? Dont be so naive. They may not be skilled enough to find work, they may have been abused in hostels, employers are not renowned for employing people without a home, or more practically, an address. If you're brought up in a decent home with a good family and find yourself on the street you're armed with knowledge and contacts and the motivation to help you get back on your feet. You have no idea whatsoever about the paths these people's lives have taken so stop judging.

I feel sympathy for all human beings, including homeless people. Sometimes people make mistakes and follow the wrong path in life, for which they are accountable. But leave the judging up to God. We should love them as our fellow human beings.

The people who are homeless and are still physically able, i think have probably just given up and have not got or have not received the encouragement to better themselves unfortunately. You have to be weary of people begging for money in the street as well, as its been shown, alot of these people do have houses, and this is their living.

Sometimes a man or a women's integrity and self respect is taken from them when they start receiving handouts and do nothing to earn it. Sometimes a simple hug or word of encouragement helps many to try excel for better.
