Nokia was established by Knut Fredrik Idestam in 1865 in the south-west of Finland. The company derives its name from the Nokia rapids; on the banks of which there first facility was situated. They started out producing paper pulp. In the 1900's, Nokia along with Finnish Cable Works (FCW was already a producer of cabling for telephonic applications at this time.) was purchased by Finnish Rubber Works. These companies remained as seperate subsiduaries until they were incorperated into the Nokia Corp. in 1967. There you go. A brief history of Nokia Corp. I that answers your question.
