The north star I suppose. But since Magellan was not the first to cross the equator I don't know why it would have caused his crew to freak. I bet many of them had crossed the equator before.

Polaris, or the North star was vital to navigation at the time. The crew feared getting hopelessly lost until they found a replacement. Unfortunately there was no single unmoving star and they had to settle on the southern cross.

Polaris star, of the Ursa Minor constellation. It is practically coincident with Cellestial Sphere North Pole. When you cross the equator to south you no longer see the cellestial sphere points pointed by the Earth axis.
It was important at that time, for Polaris or North Star was a reference for navigators at night.

Polaris, or the North Star, because it is very close to true North, sailors in the Northern Hemisphere have been using it for centuries as a navigation aid.

easily the pole famous individual, that's immediately above the North pole. They have been sorry to lose it as they used it for navigation. Their successors learnt to apply the Southern circulate, so all's nicely that ends nicely.
