The size thing is the key! I don't think the nano has pic capabillity so that is not it. When you initially get the songs you are usually given an encryption level for the songs i.e. 128kbps this type of thing since a mp3 file is squeezed anyway from a normal audio file so my recommendation is squeeze the songs a little more which will sacrifice some quality to gain more room for storage on your device and as long as you don't go too small the human ear will hardly notice the quality change!

500 songs are calculated on the basis of 4 mb per song, which should be real/mp3/itune file. If the files are large in other formats, dont expect ipod will hold more of them.

Its all about data here, regardless its a video or audio file. Check whether your songs downloaded in ipod are mp3. If its in case a wave file, a single song can occupy 50mb of the space.

Hope this helps you.

The songs are to big. Try lowering the quality for example from 192 kbps to 128 or something like that (if you're importing the songs from a CD). You can use an mp3 compressor to make the songs you already have smaller.

Bitrate is the key.

I'm guessing a lot of your files are 320kbps, or maybe even Apple Lossless.

Try re-encoding the really big ones to MP3 at a lower bitrate, for example 160kbps.

Check to see if any pictures are being copied to it. Pictures in large quantity will take up a lot of space on the ipod.

the songs you are probably putting in are big in size and are maybe taking up alot of the room. If you also have pictures on it to then that will also take space as well.
