Yesterday I had to get blood work done at the doctors office, and after they took my blood I started seeing spots in front of my eyes to the point of me not being able to see at all. It scared me alot (I am only 14) and I have to get more blood work done today...Is there any tips or tricks on how to avoid passing out, or fainting? Please help!

Remember to breathe. That's probably the most important part. The last time I passed out when someone was drawing my blood, I had been holding my breath the whole time. Take big deep breaths and tell yourself that this is really something that will help you. Remind yourself that you're in no real danger of getting hurt. I've gotten my blood drawn many, many times since that time that I passed out, and I'm even a nurse now, so it's totally possible to work through it. Of course it's always a good idea to lie down when it's being done, and be sure to warn the person drawing your blood of your fear so that they can help you. One more thing that I still do when I get blood drawn is that I breathe in and out of my mouth only and kind of block off my nose so I can't smell the alcohol rub. For some reason that smell used to get me.

According to my experience, fainting can be prevented by not looking at the needle as some people cannot stand the sight of blood. Also, make sure that you have eaten a couple of hours before the test, in order to keep you blood sugar up. I once got a blood test done and didn't eat anything before it and I passed out.

Alot of people pass out with various 'stressful' things. But, they're only drawing a little bit of blood----come on!!! They don't draw enough to 'make' you low on blood, it's a mental thing. Put it in perspective!!!!! They should know of your history, and you should lie down. It's all in your head-think of things way worse than drawing blood, and compare it to what you're having done. The more you dwell on it, the worse you make it. It's not that big of a deal, unless you're a kid and don't know exactly what to expect. But, adults, (over 18) should be able to rationally believe it's not a big deal!

You need to focus on a picture on the wall or focus on a thought and breathe in deeply, count to 4 while you breathe in and than count to four and hold it and to four to breathe out, just focusing your mind will help you and of course look to the other side.
Just tell yourself it will be over quicker then having an exam and count your breath, and yes have a bite to eat before you go,

Yeah, don't watch. Look away until it's done, and you won't even notice. Drink lots of water too. That will help your body replace the lost blood.

Don't watch them insert the needle. I always turn my head and breathe deeply.

Try not to watch. Ask them if you could lie down instead of sitting up. Tell them how it affects you if they don't already know. Ask them to do it quickly please.
