Can anybody tell me how long it takes usually to get thru first stage of labour?

I have been having contractions since 4am its now 2pm and they dont seem to be getting any closer, this is my first baby, has anybody else had a long first stage of labour too.? what was youre experience?

It can be 48 hours or 48 minutes... different for everyone.

Every single womans birth experience is different. The labor also depends on their mothers labor. Like with my mother she went into labor with me at about 1 pm, and I was born at 9pm. With me, my 3rd child was 2 weeks overdue here. I wasnt sure if I was in labor, which was because it was back labor and I had not experienced that one yet. I started back labor around 5pm. By the time I got to the hospital and all, he came at 8:30pm. He was my first vaginal delivery, so it was interesting. All the while the doctors had said, he would take the amount of time to come, as though he was my first, since I hadnt had the other that way. Well, at least I knew with the 4th what kind of rush I would be in for. I was in labor with her for only 2 hours and then there she was. Than goodness this time the hospital was only 5 minutes away!

my wife is due our 3rd baby in 3wks and has been in slow early labour for a few days now and still no sign of baby. Everybody is different and with it being your 1st baby things can sometimes take along time. If your worried call the hospital or your midwife for advice. Try and walk around, keeping mobile helps, if your contractions start becong strong and about 10mins apart or your waters break then make your way to the hospital. good luck

I had contractions for 2 days (time in between varied from 3 to 10 minutes) before I got taken into hospital. Contractions started at midnight on the Monday and I gave birth 1pm on the Thursday. Twice I went to hospital, twice they sent me home because I wasn't dilating enough! It was my first baby too.

You can go up the hospital to get checked out. I did. They might send back home but then at least you will know how far you are and if the baby is doing ok, with labor. Make sure you are walking, that helps to progress labor. Good luck and wish you the best.

I was in labor with my first 28 hours and with my second 4 1/2 hours. Its different with every pregnancy and woman. Good luck and congrats on the new little one about to come.

err... I was in labour for 3 days when I had my first baby lol but not to alarm you, a friend of mine was in labour for 4 hours from first contraction to havin her baby in her arms the first time its different fro everyone but I think they say to expect around a 12 hour labour for first timers good luck your nearly there!! xx

I had 25hrs of labour*
It depends on everyone*~ Has your water broke?? The contractions will get closer apart ....but 10hrs of labour pains already...you should make your way to the hospital and let them know you've already had 10hrs of labour* they can monitor you better to make sure no complications arrise with you or your baby* Best Wishes*

It differs from person to person. Some people takes hours upon hours upon hours and others happends in a matter of an hour or two. But rumor has it that your first pregnancy's labor will last much longer than your second and so on.

I was i labour 3 days. Every pregnancies is diff rent go for a walk have a hot bath that sometimes helps. GOOD LUCK.

I was induced with my son and the first stage went on for 15 hours before I was dilated to 10cm, everyones different, my friend was only 2 hours from start to finish and out her daughter popped. Wishing you luck and happiness,hope it goes well. x
