Because Henry VIII wanted a divorce from Catherine of Aragon , he requested the Pope grant him his request because she did not leave him a male heir . The pope refused and Henry VIII broke away from the Church and thus began the process of creating the Church of England. Henry VIII did. He wanted to divorce Mary, the widow of his brother. He had to take on Mary as wife by custom when that happened. Since he did not much love her, nor did she beget any sons for Henry, he decided to divorce her and remarry. Mary was related to the Holy Roman Emperor, who in turn had much influence on the pope.
