If you think about it, the human body has two of the most important Organs and Lims. For example 2 eyes, 2 legs, 2 Lungs... the list is endless.
Its a kind of safety device, one gets broke, you have a back up.
With the heart being one of the most important organs in the body why do we only have one.
Surely two smaller hearts would be must more effective??
or is this a thing of the future, maybe one day we will....

why the hell do you need an extra one?!?!

Evolution doesnot take account of extras, those not needed become vestigial organs and are phased out gradually in thousands of years.

2 eyes, 2 legs, 2 Lungs... the list being endless doesnot indicate the need of an extra heart!

Evolution of 2 hearts or more is valid only if dire need arises , for example in large sauropods which existed about 65 million years ago. They had humungous bodies and for the blood to reach their head, they had massive multiple hearts just for the purpose of pumping blood!

Besides our anatomy is such that the place of the heart is somewhat occupied by the liver on the other side, so the weight and volume distribution would have to be altered entirely in order to accommodate even 2 smaller hearts!

Human beings are small animals(in size). even the whales which are huge can manage with a single heart , why do we need one extra then?

In a sort of way we do have 2 hearts. The heart has 4 chambers, two are smaller than the other two. The smaller two pump blood from the heart to the lungs for oxygenation, and then the larger chambers, pump around the rest of the body, that is why your heart goes dum-dum. If it didn't do the lower pressure pump your lungs would explode, which would be kind of cool to watch, but not very pleasent to experience.
So perhaps you could say we do have two hearts.

None that I know of................................. But did have the privilege of meeting a lady with situs inversus. This is when all the organs of the body are on the opposite side of the body, Heart on right instead of left. Less than 1 in 10,000 people have this. She was very comical, joking about me not knowing where her heart was. She said she has had loads of fun over the years, joking with the doctors she has met.

Probably because the heart uses up so much energy and blood. It would be too draining on the body to have 2. Besides the fact that one heart is enough to do the job properly as long as you dont abuse it.

i think that with two hearts there would be more to go wrong, and if the heart was smaller, if one failed, the other would not be able to cope with the amount of blood that needs to be pumped round.

you say the most important organs and limbs we have two of, think about that, we can live without either of our legs or eyes working......the lungs need to to maximise the amount of air we take in. we only have one brain, you cannot live without this, we have one heart, you cannot live without this.........

there is a reason we have one heart, no-one could know what this is, and why we dont have two, but it proves that without the brain and the heart (one of each) the rest of the body would not function!

good question!

The same reason your car doesn't have two engines. It's not necessary. No, unless inserted by man or due to cloning, we will not one day have two hearts.

the heart has 4 chambers. left ventricle, right ventricle, left atrium and right atrium. all the chambers participate in everything that the heart does. although the left ventricle is much stronger than the other chambers of the heart.this is the case because the left ventricle is much stronger and thicker. we have two legs because without one we wouldn't be able to balance. one heart is good enough it does everything that it's suppose to. with two hearts obviously that would cause a problem.

Simple because women are so cruel they wouldn't be happy with just breaking one heart they would want to break two.

No other vertebrate has two hearts.

It might be more effective but we weren't designed, we evolved and this is what we've got.

2 eyes,2,legs 2,lungs, etc, are not a kind of safety device at all,
although we can get by with 1 kidney- lung-testacle-eye-limb
we need two to function at our our most efficient. as you can see by observing those with one eye for instance, and more especially with one limb!
